We are well and truly into the second half of the championship year for the Quick Fit British Touring Car Championship and our annual visit to Scotland and Knock Hill. Do you know we got a lot of emails and uh WhatsApp messages over the course of the weekend on Toker Live on Radio Knock Hill of people that have made the trip up from England for the very first time. And without exception, everybody had a lovely time, which kind of endorses what I say every year. If you haven't been, you need to come. Fantastic circuit, fantastic people, a great welcome, and always an awful lot of touring car action. And we had it in spades at the weekend. We have such a show lined up for you tonight. Can I ask you a question that I asked you in Park Fairme, but not not everyone would have uh heard that interview. Um did you think going into the weekend that the weekend was going to be quite as spectacular as it was for you and the team as well?

SPEAKER_07 12:13

Uh absolutely not, no. I mean, um to be honest, uh you know, we always go there with with high hopes and expectations, but I think everybody, um you know, even the engineers, myself and Dan thought this was going to be a challenge. Um just because of the nature of the circuit, the curbs and the traction zones and um you know getting the damping right for for the landing off the curbs was going to be probably one of our most difficult tracks.

But it we we spent a long time on the phones uh the week before talking about setups and what we wanted to to happen and what we needed the car to do. And uh yeah, we we got there in FP1 and you know the first push lap, you know, you just you just you know you you attack turn one and the minute I came off the curb I went, Oh hang on a minute, this is this is really this is feeling pretty this is feeling pretty good. But even at that point, you know, you didn't you don't realise how good it's going to be. Um and yeah, the biggest takeaway for me was the fact not only was it quick in the dry, but it was also quick in the wet. Uh and I think for for for for me that is a sign of right, we have now got this car in a window that handles in both conditions.

But you didn't know that going into the race, did you?

No, absolutely, absolutely not. No. Um so it was just a question of you know, just just trying to get to turn one in the lead, uh, give myself the best possible chance and opportunity with a with a clear view, no spray, and just get my head down. But you know, the the pace was there, the pace was pretty strong all the way through. So um, yeah, yeah, ri ri really good, really good for the team.

Uh when you have um what's the best way to describe it? Um, not as much success as you have previously experienced in the BTCC for a period of time. How do how do you keep on top of that? How do you keep on top of it mentally?

It's tough. Um, you know, to be honest, until someone said I hadn't realised it had been four years since my last win.

Um so you know, we've had a few podiums in between there, but an actual outright win. Um that's a long time. Um and you always go into every weekend. You you you go in there to win. Um but after after four years, you n you y you know, you never give up, you never stop believing.

Yeah, you know, I I'm still you know, we're we're s we're still racing at the highest level of UK motorsport with the best drivers in the country. So it's never going to be easy.

But you know, you like said you you never give up, you you you never stop believing, and uh you go there every every every weekend thinking, right, this is it, I'm gonna win this weekend.

Because you're a different person, your life has changed um uh certainly since you came into the BTCC. Um you're a family man now. In fact, uh maybe you could tell everybody where you are at the moment.

Um yeah, so we well we had it, we've had it in the diary for for weeks. Um we're very very lucky my my parents have a lodge um on Windermere. So we we we came up, so actually Caroline, my wife, she came straight from Knock Hill down to Windermere. Right. Um because I'm a bloke and an idiot. I I completely forgot to pack for Windermere, so I had to drive all the way home. Did you really have to drive all the way home, which is an hour past Windermere, go home, pack, spend the night, and then come up first thing Monday morning. Um so we're up here for for five days with the kids, and uh normally it chucks it down in the lakes. Um but this week we've got a bit of a heat wave, so we're it's absolutely glorious in this weather weather, isn't it? It is, yeah, it's lovely. It's lovely. So I'm in the shade under an umbrella um with factor 50 on.

Yeah, no, well, you now you have to you have to look after your skin these days. Uh I was seeing something on social media the other day um which showed Bournemouth Beach, uh sort of pretty empty, really. Um and and yet at the start of the year, I happened to be down there for uh for a gig uh one evening, and it was the first hot day of this summer, and it was absolutely rammed. Now I w I've I I've kind of worked this out. Um we're used to a couple of three nice days in the summer, aren't we, in the UK? And we go and make the most of it when they are and they pack the beaches out. But now it's been relentlessly day after day after day. Um the beaches have cleared up apparently. You know, that really yeah, they're really not as rammed as you would expect. Um and Windermere is a place that gets extremely busy, isn't it?

Yeah, it does. It does get very busy, but we're we're funny, aren't we? Because when it rains, we always moan about it raining. And then when it's too hot, we all moan about it being too hot. I know. So I think just make the most of it while you can, because it won't be long until we're back to our usual weather of grey and rain and wind.

It's the grey that I can't abide. It's the grey that I just get so fed up with. So just dull into it. Yeah. A lovely feeling when you get up in the morning and look out the window and you think it's another nice day. I think that's blue sky. Yeah, it's to be it's to be cherished, isn't it? It really. Yeah, so I've got six six six-year-old and and four-year-old twins. So it's uh it's taken some years off me, that's for sure. But you know, they're uh they're they're incredible. We love them to bits.

Um, no, no, no, no, not at all. No. You you think you're prepared beforehand and then they arrive, and then it's just chaos.

Um and the fact you're outnumbered as well. That's the problem. So when the babies and they can't move, it's fine. But then the minute they become slugs and can start running moving around, you you you're outnumbered, so you just it's a losing battle.

Yeah, no, I I I I can I completely get that. So do uh so do they come to the race meetings? Were were the they were up at Knock Hill, were they?

So uh Caroline tends to bring uh a different one each time. Normally it's whoever's been our favourite that week.

But you've got two to pick from, so that's it.

So uh well, because they they come in the motorhome and and sleep with us, I I'd say to Carlin, just bring one, because if you bring more than one, they end up staying up all night and keeping me awake. So we just bring one to each round and uh it works really well, to be honest. So uh and now they're getting older, they're starting to understand and and see what it is we do. Yes and they they love it. They love it. So I don't think it'll be too long until Freddie or or any of them might actually be in a go-kart soon.

Uh and you'll only have yourself to blame for that one.

I know, I know. I'm trying to I'm trying to throw them a set of golf clubs or a tennis practice, but they they keep picking up steering wheels.

That's not gonna work, and uh and you will only have yourself to blame. And uh and and also motorsport kind of runs in families, doesn't it? It's uh it seems to be a a a genetic thing. Your father was very, very involved in in motorsport. I was stood with him in the garage during race one at the weekend. I can confirm he is still very much involved in motorsport. He he was going through every corner with you.

Yeah, I've seen a few pictures of him looking absolutely horrified and and nervous. But yeah, like it it is, it is, it's been in the family. My granddad used to race. Yes. Um and then I I grew up watching my dad, so I've yeah, from the age of seven for me, it's just been, or even younger, six. Um, it's just been something I've just loved. Um and and we knew straight away that's what I wanted to do. And uh yeah, very luckily I've managed to get to where I am today.

So does motorsport now take up all of your time? Um uh uh I mean I I I know you used to be busy with the with the business during the week as well. Are you able to commit all your time to to motorsport yet or or is it still a day job as well?

SPEAKER_07 20:57

It's it's it's it's pretty much a day job because well it it's obviously we have the family business, Italy commercials, uh which me and my brother are heavily um occupied with, but we've also me and my brother have started our own little um project as well doing commercial property.

So we're uh three quarters of the way through doing our first project, which is um 13 commercial units. Wow. Uh and so that's that's been pretty busy for us.

Building from scratch.

Building from scratch, yeah, building from scratch. So we've that's been a steep learning curve because we've never done it before. Um so just the whole planning and then all the stuff that goes with it in terms of height, eaves, height, roll shutter doors, and you need turning circles for trucks, so just stuff you know you don't even think about. Um but loved it, loved it. So we're we're we're pretty close to looking at our um our second project uh coming through and just something that we're that we've been working on together. So that's that's been really good fun. Really cool news.

That's ri really cool news. And and and and of course, the um uh obviously it used to be Sicily motorsport that that ran you as a team, and then uh you had to find a drive elsewhere. But Sicily are still um uh very much featured in your motor racing, aren't they?

Yeah, 100%. I mean we made the switch to uh Catacline Plateau racing because of the the connection to Mercedes.

Yeah.

Um obviously we're a commercial dealership selling trucks and vans, um, and we thought you know, also being back in a Mercedes-Benz car just made so much sense for us. And this weekend in particular, up at Knock Hill, was just fantastic for us because we're we're building our a new dealership up in Scotland.

So it's fit. So we we had um two guys from Sicily, Callum and Scott, um who they'll be running the site in Scotland, and they brought a load of customers uh to the weekend as well. Um even though the site's not up and running yet, we've still got you know potential customers up there, and they came and watched, and it couldn't have got any better. So uh that was really good news, and they they all loved it. So uh yeah, for us that that whole weekend was just perfect. You know, just amazing.

If if you want to show off your motorsport wares, I mean you you could say to potential people that you're gonna be working with, oh yeah, no, I I'm I I'm involved in BCCC, why don't you come along? You can't expect that you're gonna have the weekend that you that you actually had, can you?

No, and well, counter to that, my local track at Alton uh was an absolute disaster. Um I don't think we finished a single race, so it was just you know it's just one of those, isn't it? But uh Knockle Knockell was was yeah, just just a weekend to remember. Um you know, not just for me, just for the whole team as well. Um you know, me and Dan at a P1, P2. Dan had another podium in race two, and and me in race three. So it was just perfect. You know, it was just what what the whole team has deserved uh you know for the amount of work and effort that they've put in. And you know, we we have missed you know, let's be honest, we we mess as we missed the setup window at the start of the year. We didn't have the performance that we were all expecting and hoping for. Yes. Um but you know the guys have never given up. And uh yeah, I think we I think it's fair to say we turned the corner at Knockhill.

It was it was a bit of a false storm, wasn't it, with uh with Dan winning the the the first race to pole of the year uh uh because all of the celebration, the the fairy tale story of that. But then it was like, okay, right, now well what do we have to do now? Because uh because it hasn't been plain sailing, as you were saying. One of the things I like to observe is the way that you and Dan work really well together, don't you? You you you know each other of old, of course.

Yeah, so well I mean me and Dan have been karting since we were eight, nine years old. Yes, yeah. So we've known each other for donkeys. Um and you know, another pull to the team was you know being teammates with Dan because he was also my teammate back in 2017, something like that.

Was it that long ago?

It was a long time ago, but yeah, we we were teammates, and uh the chief engineer Paul Ridgeway, you know, he was also mine engineer uh back in the Sicily Motorsport days. So you know, I knew a lot of the team already, so I could go in there and just gel straight away. Yes. Uh I knew how Dan works, I know how Paul works. Um you know, mine engineer Tom, you know, we we get on really well. So it was just lovely, you know, the whole thing just fits.

Um and but yeah, like I said, it's it's been a bit of a bit of an uphill battle um to get to where we are what to get to you know what happened at Knock Hill.

Um but but on the whole, you know, I think we're moving in the right direction. And what we have to work on now though is make sure that that Nock Hill weekend wasn't a one-off.

Yeah, exactly. That's we've yeah, fantastic weekend, but we can't get blindsided and think we've we've done it. We need to make sure this carries on now to the end of the season.

So, what are your thoughts going forward? Let let let's have a look at the circuits that we're going to. We're going to Donington Park, Grand Prix Circuit, we're going to Croft, uh, we're going to Silverstone, of course, and then finishing up on the Grand Prix Circuit at Brands Hatch. Let's have a look at Donington first of all. What what what what's the what's the thinking?

SPEAKER_07 26:42

Yeah, so Donnington for us is actually pretty good because it's the first track we go back to that we've already been to. We've got data. So we've got some data, we've got something we can um you know, we can we can see where our strengths and weaknesses were from the first time we were there. So that's really important for us. Um but yeah, like I said, you know, I think this car now is is in a window. Um so I'm just really excited to go back there now and just just just just get on it, you know, just just let's just finish a season how we you know strongly. That's that this is the part that people remember, the you know, the last half of the season.

Yeah. I'm gonna come back to your kids, if I may, Adam, uh, because uh I get to ask on uh as you know of old because you've been coming on this show for donkeys years, uh we get to ask things that we don't necessarily ask on a on a race weekend, and something that that happened a good few meetings ago at Snetterton uh that I wanted to talk to you about, but I hadn't had the opportunity. Um so the little replica electric Mercedes that whizzes around the uh paddock, is it is is that one of one of your little ones? Is is that a little Morgan that owns that?

Yeah, so he he he builds them and he does all the things.

Yes, yeah, so he races the mini, but when he's not on the re on the weekend that he's racing, he's my one of my uh mechanics. So he bought her long to Sneterton and uh yeah, my little girl Heidi jumped in it and then I couldn't couldn't get her out. No. After that, she turned into a writing diva. She refused to walk anywhere. So um but yeah, no, he does he does a really good job, and I think great little bit of kick. I think I think you know, if some people get in contact with him, I think he's uh he he does build them and sell them to people. So if anyone's interested.

Yes, yeah, he actually um was on the podium with me. When would that have been? That was Alton Park, I think, in COVID. Oh, was it? Yeah, and I think Oh god, was that the last race I won? Yeah, and I think he came on the podium with me. So he might I he he's obviously bringing me some luck, so he might have to keep coming.

You might have to pack him. Don't forget to pack him. Um I know you've got a track record of forgetting to pack. So can I just ask about that? Because there are lots of things that that you need to do, particularly when you're going from one gig to another. Um, so for example, I was last week I was working on a job down in Cornwall, and then I got uh drove back from Cornwall up to Heathrow, up to Knock Hill. So the number of bags and equipment that I had to pack on Monday for the for the whole week, um, it sort of took up my living room to be perfectly fair. There were but there were bags and boxes everywhere. Um have you have you not got your head around that that fool of planning yet?

I don't know what's it because I'm I'm a little bit OCD. Like I am, yeah, I am. I'm quite I'm I've tried to pride myself on being very organised. Methodical yeah, so I have everything, I mean it's an absolute chaos being a teammate with Dan because he is a nightmare. He just comes running in and says, I've lost a glove, I've lost a glove. Oh right, okay. So we're polar opposites in that respect. Right. So how I completely forgot to pack a bag for a week, I I do not know. I don't know. I think I got to about I think it was Gretna Green, and I just sort of went, hang on a minute, I'm missing something here, and it was a full week's worth of clothes.

So it was one of those, but I mean, luckily, you know, it's not too bad because we're door to door from from our from home to um Windermere is an hour, so it's not crazy. Yeah, it's not too bad.

So me, Paul, Dan and Tom will have a catch-up uh possibly tomorrow or Thursday and just you know get our thoughts down and and on you know, have a review of knockhill. Yes. I do forget to tell you what songs are. So we started with Billy Idol and Hot in the City because it's hot in the city. And that is uh by Son of Dave called Shake a Bone. First heard that uh it was uh one of the pieces of music that featured in Breaking Bad, and I have recently found it again on social media. If you are on TikTok, um search for Shake a Bone by Son of Dave. Search for that bit of music, and you will find uh the most amazing piece of animation of a little guy that looks a little bit like Morph, and it's set to that piece of music, and it really amuses me. Uh so that's why we played it. Shake a Bone, Son of Dave. Jill and Stuart Garvey, good evening. Fantastic weekend of BTCC racing at the iconic Nock Hill circuit. Highlights for us with the emergence of Plato Racing on the top step of the podium for Adam Morgan. Brackets, the Morganator. Yeah, I didn't mention that, did I? Uh, and Dan Robottom after a dominant display in tricky conditions. Also, highlights were Tom Chilton's race uh from pole to victory in race three, and Dexter Patterson's success in the Jack Sears and independent categories as well. Sorry to see Tom Ingram's run of bad luck continue as it became uh fast becoming a one-horse race for the championship, which no one wants to see this early in the season. I am sure Tingram will still give it 110% as he always does. Attached are a few photos for consideration of image of the week. Best wishes from uh from Jill and Stuart Garvey. And the pictures are brilliant, in particular the picture of Tom Chilton throwing the trophy up on the top step of the podium and uh Dan Cam and uh Adam both watching that happening. Um and it it's almost like if you're old enough to remember spot the ball competition, because the trophy is high in the air. You can see the black uh square base of the trophy. Almost looks like you've sort of uh edited something out of the picture, but uh that is a superb picture. And he caught it as well. Superb, well done. Um, you caught it and he caught it. Uh Ian Marshall says, Hi, Alan, great weekend as usual at Nock Hill. Slightly disappointing as a Tingram fan to see the points gap to Ash increasing yet again. But that's racing, I suppose. There was pl uh action of plenty and lots to enjoy. This was my fifth year in a row camping at Nock Hill, my favourite track on the calendar. I even had sausages for tea and survived. That's a reference to me having sausages uh for tea on second year camp and not surviving. Well, I survived, but I was terribly poorly. Uh there's a few photos below that I thought you might like. All the best uh from Ian Marshall. Oh, the Pipers are superb. Weren't they cool? They are just so cool. Uh a great picture, Ash on the top step of the podium in uh race two, and uh Ricky alongside absolutely soaking the crowd, the huge crowd in front of the podium. So yeah, a a slightly different year this year because we we took our summer break not even halfway through, didn't we? So it's thrown us all out out of out of kilter a little bit. Um it hasn't put the brakes on Napa Racing UK though, has it? Goodness me.

Now we're we're back to it and yeah, still fighting fit. So yeah.

How how much work did you as a team have to do during that that seven-week break?

SPEAKER_01 42:42

Um uh whether we had to do it or whether we chose to do it. Um yeah, we we chose to do uh our usual amount. We we try not to take anything for granted and we don't take a foot off the gas at all. Uh I mean we we were out testing the the following week uh with Dan and Ash at Sneterton and we had a mini out there as well. So um, yeah, we we we tend not to we tend not to to stop working and uh the guys back at the base have yeah done a fantastic job and um yeah we're we're not lifting off the gas just yet.

Um I remember uh a a good few seasons ago when Ash won his last title with you that that throughout the year, whenever I whenever I spoke to to Ash in Park Ferme, it was it was always all about well, we did the work before the season started, really, and and what and worked out how we were going to work the car with uh the minimum of boost or previous to that, the minimum of weight in the car. Um that was the same story this year. You did a lot during the winter, didn't you?

Uh we did, yeah. I mean obviously the biggest change is the visual one that we sprouted a boot.

Um and we we we s we obviously worked as as hard as we can and we were finding that we were kind of getting to a point where the arrow was dominating at the fact that we couldn't quite take it to the Hondye or the BMW at the time. And um so yeah they uh a plan was hatched and uh the engineers back at Alliance Racing uh yeah put a a really uh really strong shift in to to do all the work to get the boot on because obviously it's not as readily available as uh uh as other cars or certainly the hatch was so um yeah quite a lot of work before the car was actually finished and built so a lot of simulation work and design work was done yeah and uh yeah then we went to Catesby Tunnel which is a really cool facility to do some some validation work uh that that did validate most of the questions that we had and uh the engineers especially Tony was uh was really happy with those results uh and then yeah then a really good a good pre-season uh track testing program as well that's always kind of key uh to get to get some decent we got some really good weather some really good test days so we we put a couple of differences doesn't it yeah big big difference so they are the same cars aren't they they have a bit they are yeah yeah yeah they have literally just sprouted the boot so uh yeah Royce back at base was doing uh uh a whole chunk of fabrication to them and uh yeah fundamentally they're they're the same but then they're the same but different because the front aero package is different because the car that we used the titanium uh had a different front end on it so there was some some cool impact work done some engine work done uh sort of load of aero work done so yeah it was a it was a uh the usual kind of postseason bit of everything and um yeah it was uh yes seems to have been going well so far so we're quite quite happy with that.

It has gone very well indeed. You can afford to be quite confident the season that Ash is having this year and the way he works around the the lack of boost is once again just a masterclass isn't it?

Yeah I mean he he and the team around him are incredible. He is just something else and and you say about the he he works around the issues. I think one of his biggest strength is is how he deals with the negative um dealing with positives is is reasonably easy. Dealing with a negative and bouncing back from whether it's a DNF in the quality race at uh at Donnington or a puncture in the quality race at Snet um he's had a couple of setbacks and the way he responds to the setback with such positivity um is is probably one of his biggest strengths. And again it's not just him either it's the crew behind him as well.

The guys in the team um yeah so yeah he is he is phenomenal though and uh yeah just keeps proving it week in week out and he doesn't take anything for granted I mean um it's we're we're still pushing we're not backing off and um yeah it's uh yeah it's a joy to work with yeah I'm I I'm I'm sure it is Ollie because you as we've said many times here on this show have a huge amount of experience in the BCCC paddock you have worked with top top teams you've worked with uh Team Dynamics for some time WSR for some time and and now here you are at Alliance Racing UK with a completely different working scenario but what but one that just this year everything has just clicked once again hasn't it?

Yes yeah and and I mean obviously yeah my my my role's changed within the team as well uh as it's evolved so there's a a really strong group of people here that uh a lot of which doing the jobs that I used to do and they do it better than I did. So uh yeah credit to Tom on that one in particular so and Pete's amazing as the team boss to work with and his ambition is fantastic. So I kind of feel a bit guilty. I kind of swan in on a Thursday or a Friday and uh most of the work's already been done but yeah it's the it's yeah I know it sounds a bit soppy and obvious but uh this is a team sport and uh we have a really a really strong one. We we spoke about it at Truxton and obviously we had the the really bad news that Sam fell ill on the Friday um now we also had we had three three people in the build up to that weekend including obviously plus Sam and then one had to disappear sharply on the Friday and in any normal circumstance you'd feel an issue behind that because you you're weakened because your your core staff some of them have had to leave yeah yeah man down but the way the rest of the team took up the slack and we operated as efficiently as we would have done if we were a full full strength was a real credit to the guys to the guys there and we had another great weekend with results um and yeah it's that it's those it's when you're up against it and the boys just pull out the bag and yeah you you kind of come away and you go wow this really is a fantastic team of people.

Well Senna just slotted into the into the job that he only found out seven o'clock on Saturday morning that he was there.

Yeah yeah so and and again I mean we we we looked at our options and we wanted to have a reserve driver and obviously it would have been fantastic to have had Senna on the grid um and be racing against him but things hadn't really worked out for him pre-season. Yeah so we kind of saw this opportunity and we didn't really think it was gonna work because we thought well he's he's gonna get a drive and when he didn't it was like well we'll tell you what we would love to have you work with Sam specifically as a driver coach but also you'll be our reserve driver should should the the the situation arise and again you kind of look at that and you go yeah we did that for a reason and that came to uh came to fruition at at Truxton in a in a seamless change and yeah what a fantastic job he did on and off track um yeah brilliant it was it was uh yeah good weekend it it was good to see Sam back on the uh on the on the grid he had a bit of bad luck over the course of the weekend but uh good to see him back uh I'm he did I mean he bounced back really strongly he was he's really he's been uh really kind of poid uh in the last week and he's a lot happier and uh yeah he he took to the track and was was spot on he had some really good performances and a little bit of bad luck as well to boot um kind of touring car Knockier esque if you like but no he's back he's as strong as he's been and um yeah did look forward to the yeah the rest of the season I hated it when when we heard that Sam was poorly could because of course it was uh around about a year ago that although competing in the in the mini challenge series rather than the BTCC uh his brother Jamie was taken poorly and couldn't race uh and and and uh they've they've been through it the Osborne's over the last year haven't they? Yeah Pete and Mel have had their fair share of some stress over the last couple months and uh so no it's nice nice for them as a family to to see uh to see Sam back at it and um and Jamie's recovering quietly in the background I was I was just gonna ask um can you give us an update on Jamie because he was doing such good things in Mini Challenge. Yeah I mean well he was he was uh looking really good for the championships um last year he was uh yeah just uh in a different league and um yeah it was a real shame for him that he didn't get to finish that season. Um but yeah he seems he's getting better good um whether we'll see him a c in a car again soon or not I'm not so sure but um it'd be nice to see him in one and um yeah but no he's he's doing well and uh yeah the Osborne's uh in a good place.

Uh Dan Camish was on the podium once again. This is a full recap of Napa Racing UK so far. Um he's always there or thereabouts isn't he but he he he is one of those drivers that so often we we say he just gets a bit of bad luck doesn't he?

Yeah yeah the uh the bad luck came with the uh the tiny movement in the start procedure which unfortunately uh it is what it is that's it's in the rules you're not allowed to do it rules are rules and um yeah exactly um but again and a bit like what I spoke about with Ash earlier he bounced back from that huge negative yes um to a really strong performance in in race two which set him up for the reverse grid and then got back on the podium for race three despite being on the medium tire so um yeah he was highest finisher on the medium so yeah again um and he he obviously with Tom Ingram having a an unfortunate weekend himself it meant that he closed the gap slightly on Tom and um yeah we'll uh with Dan we're we're keeping pushing as well so we we've s uh spoken about Mini Challenge and coming from Mini Challenge is your fourth driver this year Lewis Selby who has an inextricable link with Napa UK doesn't he? He does yeah he's the boss well one of the bosses he's uh I I think he's uh well I think his title's managing director yes um so he sees a much bigger picture and um yeah he's been at Napa for a long time and he's he's he's a real key part of their management structure in them having a success nothing to do with the racing but to do with their parts business and um so yeah he's been he's been driving a long time um in minis mainly he was in the older style minis um for years that's right yeah and then when we set up Napa racing he slotted into the to the mini JCW team and uh yeah he then uh progressed into the touring car team for this year so he's progressing this year isn't he yeah he won't mind me saying he's one of the the older rookies yeah and uh but yeah sometimes you you have to remember although he's not a rookie to racing in any way shape or form he's a rookie to this championship yeah and anyone that comes in this championship normally gets a bit of a rude awakening as to just how competitive it is and how there's so much more to being a successful British touring car driver than just driving the car fast. There's so much more going on and uh yeah so he's learning every weekend and he's knocking on the door of that top ten and he probably should have had one by now he certainly had the pace to and um but that that'll come.

And uh yeah yeah he had a he had a good an enjoyable weekend at Nock Hill if uh yeah if a little bruising at times but but but it was uh it was that link that wanted to bring me on to uh to what Napa do for Nock Hill every year. I think this was the fourth year um that you have been raising money uh race against dementia is where the uh where all of the proceeds go but the unique livery on the cart which I thought this year looked fantastic the the Napa colours tartan uh the new race suits the team clothing the merchandise the helmets that Joe Tanner produced uh for uh race against dementia it it uh this is a huge thing that you have to do every year now isn't it and and every year you have to to raise the bar a little higher yeah it but it is fantastic to to be involved in and I think it's the fifth year because I think we started in 2022 yeah is it really and um when the idea first came up it was like really like we're gonna change the livery on the car one off yeah yeah and then like you say each year we get stronger and we learn a little bit more from the year before and um we embrace it fully and it's a it's a fantastic cause with race against dementia um but it's fantastic with the Scottish fans as well and the the charity the charity work that's being done and the money that's raised is is outstanding.

I think they came close to a hundred thousand pounds of of uh charity money made with last year. Yeah uh so we're looking to top that this year and uh it's uh it was a really good weekend for it like you say the livery the suits the crash helmets so the helmets this year were designed by fans in a competition it's so cool but and what Joe then does with them is just beyond words isn't it yeah no I think he gets nervous with it because we we we went to a dinner on Thursday night in Edinburgh and we revealed them to the drivers hadn't seen them at all none of us none of us had really Joe obviously had and uh he said he said I really hope I've done the the work justice that that these these uh children had put into the design and uh and yeah they were just yeah they were stunning just a brilliant variety of of helmet designs and when you see what he was presented with he's done it perfectly like even the brush strokes of the ones that were done hand changing some of some of them were graphic designed and yes really cool talent he is and how cool it is for them as well to see their design on a crash helmet in the turn and they got a little half size model of it didn't they? They did yeah Lewis was actually quite jealous he he wanted his own stuff but instead he's gonna have to bid for the full size one that he was wearing so and that's what happens with them now is it yeah so they go to an auction I think they're live now uh that you can you can bid bid for uh a piece of um British touring car history and memorabilia my my favourite was Ash's helmet I thought it was just spectacular wasn't it absolutely it was really cool they they they all had a a different unique design but yeah ashes was was pretty cool it was it was something else um do you sell I mean uh in in particular for the Knock Hill weekend do you sell a lot of merch is it a sort of a truckload of merch that turns up yeah so the standard merch is always available but the Scottish merch um the because it's a one-off I think the excitement behind it um is is great and um yeah there's always there's always people down at the shop uh throughout the weekend buying the merch they had some really nice stuff the hoodies and the t-shirts for were really well designed and yeah so no it was it was very cool and like you say it gets bigger and better each year.

It does and then we did a a great track walk on Saturday night which had a load of people had more than we've ever had so uh people walk the track with the drivers as well and um yeah just it's it's really nice again nice to be part of that and it's nice to see the people appreciating the work the extra work that's put in and uh yeah thanks to the guys at at Napa for for pushing that every year and uh getting stronger and stronger every year in your garage during free practice at Nock Hill I go and have a little chat to Steve Richardson from uh from Napa UK uh uh uh about exactly what he's done and he said we're already in the planning for next year so I guess I guess you have to be because it exactly as we just said it it just gets bigger and better every year doesn't it it's it it does and we do like a special livery at Napa and all I'll say is we're not done yet.

Watch this space uh well I'm ri I'm really chuffed about that we we we've seen um we've seen different liveries from your team uh at Silverstone before haven't we so that's where I'm I'm I'm hedging my bets uh but uh it it's it's brilliant Ollie we love going to Knock Hill in in Scotland and uh the uh the the hard work that you put in so do you now have to strip these cars back and put the normal livery on?

Yep. Yeah that's a lot of work isn't it yeah it is a lot of work this one was a little bit a little bit different different and a bit more efficient actually because it the design was effectively to make it look like there was a car cover a tartan car cover draped over. Yeah um so it was actually applied over the base livery so the front and rear bumpers remained the same um the the the main bit in the middle was different but it in theory it should be a an easier way to get back to the original livery.

So what it reminded me of Ollie you you know you know the very smart Scottish pipers and they have I don't know what it what it is but they have the tartan draped over their their their shoulder and it comes down. I thought it looked like that that's uh that's uh what immediately I I thought it looked like I thought it looked fantastic. Thank you Archie of attached some photos as always thank you for everything you do for the BTCC these are really cool pictures Archie I know you're you're uh I think you've told me in the past that you're studying photography and you can see you can see how the pictures are getting better and better in particular that one of Adam Morgan up on the uh left hand side of the car two wheels on the right in the air uh from the tail end of the car Dan Kavish's car draped in tartan these are really good Archie these are really really good pictures thank you very much indeed for sending them in um if you got close to the Napa racing uh forward focus titaniums um the black line at the bottom you thought why has it got a black line at the bottom then when you step back from the car you realise that it's the 3D effect of the of the of the draping of the tartan absolutely superb and you really picked it up on the uh on the Lewis Selby car that's uh that's absolutely brilliant uh well done uh uh good evening Alan and Laura hope you are both doing well uh you are a hard m man to find on a weekend but after a few tries it was great uh having a a little chat uh thank you again for the stickers you are very welcome Josh and Alice very welcome now to get on to the weekend after drying out and back in Yorkshire as I've always been a JP lover from his days driving SATS to see his cars get a podium in every race and finally getting the cars uh where they are working it's wonderful to see I think the wind uh was making a few eyes water on Sunday a few people said that I don't believe it for a minute and what a race from Ricky Collard as well what a driver he is it's such a shame he's struggling to find uh the budget to uh go racing for the whole year it was also nice to see him uh for him to congratulate Jason and the team on their results seeing Jason uh uh out with his arm uh around Ricky later on as well uh could this be the start of something who knows a few people have said that I've read that a few times uh on um various social media media channels uh please see attach the photos I submit uh one is of a typical uh not kill wheel to wheel action with a young Scotsman uh the second is the two Plato purple wonders coming first and second the third is a funny shot of a mini after having its front end ripped off uh with uh wheel wheel arches it I know what that picture is like I'm Batman uh thought you'd find the uh this one funny and comical uh the fourth uh the uh podium showcasing the wonderful weather uh we're having and finally uh the one of the stickers on the new camper with the Gary Stag comment commentary tower in the background on Monday uh before coming home. As a side note I'd like to say it was nice to see all the drivers of the Legends crash on Saturday get out okay. And and also the same Simon Reed at Donnington after having his uh big off in uh on Sunday in race five. Tom Chilton this is great thank you very much indeed for joining us thanks for having me Alan very very happy man after Nock Hill that is for sure I'm still I didn't sleep last night I actually um I was up till ten past one this morning because I'm still full of adrenaline I so I so I saw your post I I I I don't know which social media platform I was looking at but I saw your post it was about I don't know ten hours ago so it was last night um uh you said I'm still buzzing from the from the from the top step of the podium which is fantastic you've been racing a long time but it still means so much to win it does because it's not like I mean you know if I got another championship which isn't as competitive because this is probably one of the most competitive championships in the world yes I'll be on the podium every time I go out you know it's because it's so competitive it's so hard to to to win in this yes even when you're winning championships you don't actually get that many wins in a year because it's so hard.

Yeah eight years yeah be good slog but I was looking at Nock Hill I think that was my eighth podium at Nock Hill and my second win at Nock Hill. So even though I've had eight podiums that was only my second win I had lots of other seconds and thirds so it's hard getting the win my last win I fended off um Colin Turkington and the rain for the win that was my last win there and um you know obviously a front wheel drive car in the rain up the hill it was like trying to get the traction versus Turkington and the BMW and I just managed to sneak across the line ahead um which isn't easy. So you know it's nice that I've won there in the wet and the dry I was lucky that last race the sun came out and had a soft tyre left and it was just get the best start possible and just don't look back and I just went flat out.

Every lap was a qualilap Alan well seeing Tom Chilton on a on a qualilap is always something to behold including I mean I always think of you when we go to Thruxton because it is one of those amazing fast circuits that that need a huge amount of bravery and and whenever you get out of the car at Thruxton and come back into Pit Lane and get out of the car you've always got this big broad smile on your face and uh and did you see me at church all that kind of stuff um did you see on lap 16 oh my god it's exactly that and and that kind of enthusiasm is so so infectious and what so so what's the secret to you at Nock Hill because you do go well at Nock Hill.

Yeah well sadly I didn't have a great start out of the box for the car wasn't quite perfect out of the box and uh that that held me back in qualifying but Barry worked super hard my imagine and um and we chipped away at it all throughout the weekend uh bit by bit by bit and and what you'll see as you look across the whole year with me other than Snetterton when I qualified on pole all year I get there with a car by the end of the weekend with a setup and um and when I get there if I start on the front row no one's going to get past me. And it's just you know it's really nice obviously all the experience between me and Barry we we can we can engineer a car I just we're we're going down our own route which is different from the other three in the team. Right um and I do think I've got a very very good car at the end of the weekend it's just getting to that point it's it's the Saturdays are letting me down um I think it's also the quality race mainly is letting me down with just everyone's driving so aggressively at the moment. Right. And um you know me I I give it everything I've got but I'm just not used to after doing it for so many years it's almost the lack of respect on track now.

You know I always seem to get hit by somebody it's been quite frustrating for me this year. Or I've had lots of you know we've had alternators have been our main issue within the team this year. Yeah but we've you know I think Tom's had five DNFs through there being an alternator failure or an engine failure or or whatever. And um yeah it's amazing one thing lets you what lets it down and then it is it's fighting back all weekend um when when it hasn't gone well at the beginning. So the Saturdays is what I need to work on personally. So at Donington Park in two weeks I'm gonna try and get a pole position like I did last year. That's that's my main focus. Yes.

Well the the the interesting thing you mentioned Tom uh I I find it fascinating to see how the two of you have hit it off since you've been together. I I I I I get the impression that you thoroughly enjoy having Tom as a teammate.

I do yeah me and Tom have got um a bromance going on now I mean like you know it was really nice he came to the podium um uh uh to to watch me at Not Hill and and then he he actually rung me up uh today and yesterday talking to me um and he's he's he's just really really happy for me and we get on really really well and I think we've got potentially some fun things we can do together next year which I'm quite excited about um which can't talk about on here yet but I think you know uh the future of the TomToms going forward is quite quite big. We've got some really fun things lined up because we have got you know we've got we've got a good friendship on and on and off track. We respect each other. I massively respect Tom and and and I think that that comes across and we don't mind if we you know take the biscuit out of each other or have a giggle. We know how to make each other laugh and I think on camera as well that comes across really well.

You can't make up a chemistry when you when when you're broadcasting you've either got it or you haven't and uh yeah exactly and you to you two have you two have got it in spades the the last time I had a a a proper good chat away from the race meeting with you was at Goodwood a few years ago um when you absolutely made up that it was Billy Gibbons from Z Top that had been performing on the on the Saturday night.

You like your music don't you exactly that that was all I was singing after we saw Z Top that evening at Goodwood such a good evening that was a cool night wasn't it I remember I grabbed everyone and got us up on stage and I was so close I was looking at like the carrots in his beard from Z Top it was epic so so you like your music don't you what what s what what sort of music is your thing is it is it rock is it is it the Z Z Top kind of thing? I mean yeah rock and roll is up there definitely one of the best isn't it 100% but there there's a time for everything you know if I've got to slow myself down I've got to slow myself down on the motorway obviously a bit of classical FM you can't go wrong with that. Right yep um or you know if I'm I'm going somewhere on holiday I want like a bit of a happy sunshine vibe you know like there's there's there's there's always different different music for different moods and I think nobody can just have one topic you know one genre of music. I think it's got to be a mixture depending on the day eclectic mix yeah or prodigy for the Jil to generation as we used to say on the front of the CD cover. So so if you were to pick a song tonight uh which we play after you've been been on on the show Tom what what would be your go-to song at the moment for the way you're feeling go to so I um probably probably happy wouldn't it oh yeah okay we can do it I'm happy you know that's because I've got to go home to all my kids and they'll watch minions on TV but you are you are the funniest dad in the world you are like a bundle of energy um we're going camping in the new forest you know there's just been a big fire down there we've been camping on Thursday to Sunday so um hopefully we uh yeah we don't get no it's alright the fire brigade there have been 120 farmen on site down in the New Forest and they've put the flames out it was just a car going along the A31 which broke down and us Brits when we break down we're not used to thinking oh the grass is burnt we shouldn't park there someone's just parked up and then it started a fire.

But abroad where it's hot all the time people know not to park on the hot on the burnt grass because it'll you know the dead grass it will just light won't it but our country don't know that we've had quite a lot of this lately didn't you used to live down that way didn't you used to live down at sandbanks yeah I used to yeah Bournemouth sandbanks yeah so I was really close down I used to mountain bike a lot around the New Forest I know it very well that's a great place isn't it oh it's a great place I absolutely love it it's um it's definitely one of my favourite places to go in the country Cornwall New Forest absolutely love it yeah it's beautiful I was in Cornwall last week and uh and and yeah it's uh if if you ever get a day off and the weather is nice heading down to that part of part of the world uh down at Sandbanks is a is a lovely little day trip that's for sure beautiful yeah so so four kids Tom just bring us up to speed with how old they all are now how how old are the army so so the the youngest Charlie turned a couple of weeks ago four years old he's gonna be my future McLaren world champion in Formula One definitely yeah yeah he definitely got it and then I've got um George who's ten years old Rupert who's 11 and Freddie is 13 so I have a teenager now which is absolutely mental when I think about it.

Freddie is 13 now this is terrifying it is terrifying secondary school's got a mobile phone he just rung me about an hour ago actually wow um he's very excited to go camping he absolutely loves camping so I even though I'm you know what's really nice is when we go away camping it it even though it's hot at the moment and it's a heat wave when it it's 15 degrees in the middle of the night you do suddenly get a bit cold don't you? Yes of course and um you never feel that in the house with windows open because it still stays hot in the house but outside you start feeling the cool and what's quite nice I get all my boys sort of cuddling me because I'm just like this big horse fossil and I'm just like oh I've got my boys around me and it's just like it's really nice you're just the best dad you are just the funnest dad which of them uh enjoy the racing which one of them says dad can I come this weekend please oh I think my youngest Charlie I think he has definitely definitely got the bug 100% um he sits on my lap in my in my virtue defender 130 he always sits on my lap and drives it up the driveway I stop and he undoes his harness because he's got one of those kids' seats car seats obviously in the back um and he gets out and jumps over to get on my lap every time to drive up the driver and turns it in and he's got a little toy land which is one of these beautiful made beautifully made uh electric cars for kids to drive and he drives it around the garden absolutely flat out he misses by half an inch every time I'm like oh how did you miss that one and like and then the other boys get in and they're the one who crash it and damage it and they're a lot older. I'm like how have you just done that where your four year old brother literally can't hit anything it's just like um wow so because he's gonna be a future Formula One world champion with McLaren you were very specific about that. McLaren I I think yeah I think McLaren definitely is where he's gonna go um yeah we're we're big McLaren fans here down here at Birch we like McLaren a lot and um well you you you've you you've mentioned the uh the business you were back to back to work on Monday morning were you I was yeah I wanted to have my fitness trainer at 8 30 in the morning I was getting back at midnight from Edinburgh did that for two hours which I do every Monday Wednesday Friday if I'm not a racetrack I always do my my my trainer every Monday Wednesday Friday morning and then I come straight to Birch um and I do that as well on Tuesday. Tell us what's but what Birch is Tom for people at Birch if everybody doesn't know when I'm when I'm not at a racetrack the other five days of the week I'm at Birch and I'm commercial director here. So we uh store cars and we do cars and logistics um but we offer a white glove service or a bonded warehouse and we're the only car storage facility in the United Kingdom which is approved by uh the insurance companies uh particularly Chubb, Aviva FM Global which are the biggest um so we we can get really really cool car collectors turn up and have this pat the same passion as me love driving love cars and I just have these wonderful conversations with with people who turn up in their their wonderful cars which are like pieces of art so we look after them like a piece of art and are incredibly um built you know state of the art building um and uh yeah we've we've got the whole lot fire suppression we've got security guards we've got absolutely everything to look after a car the best it can possibly looked after I've seen some I enjoy it I've seen some of your videos I mean you are perfectly placed you've always been good with with media TV radio whatever it is um but you do quite a few of the videos online for the business don't you yeah absolutely it's the the tricky part is we can't really film inside the warehouse because it's a vault. So we've got some clients who've got some very very rare special cars can't say their names I can't say what the cars are and I can't go filming in there. And you know that that's tricky trying to advertise the business when we're without showing what what what it's doing. Yeah it's super private you know that that's the whole point of us so I have to be very careful all the time what I say but all anyone needs to know is we are genuinely the best at storing cars in the country and we're setting a standard and everyone's trying to copy us at the moment um but no one's got close yet luckily all of it means Tom is that you're very very busy but we're pleased that you've still got time to get onto the top step of the podium it's a it's always a feel good moment when you climb aboard as a I've actually started storing the trophies at Birch behind our beautiful bar.

Because my wife's like there is too many in the house they're clustering the house I think over the years I've in all the different things I've had well over a hundred trophies. You can't keep them in any one house because it's just ridiculous. So it's quite nice I can start bringing them to Birch. And you know this year I've I felt like I was robbed of a first at Snettison after qualifying poll. Yes I felt like I was robbed of a second at Autumn Park um but I've managed to get a third at Snett in one of the other races and obviously got the first this weekend so we're getting there. And at Donington Park obviously last year got the poll and the win so I'm hoping I can do a bit more of the same in a couple of weeks after hopefully not crooking my back in a tent down in the heath yeah yeah yes you take care um because when when you're camping in warmer conditions that's when you do get a crook in your neck or or s something silly like that. So uh well actually funny enough that when you're on a blow up bed the warmer it is at night the less it lets the air pressure down obviously because when it's hotter it stays harder. Yeah yeah actually the problem with the crook in the the neck or the back is when the blow up bed goes down too much because it gets too cold at night it you then sink and then that's when you do a back. Yes. But actually it's going to be warm enough I'm gonna pump it up extra hard just before it gets cold and it should be good all night. Someone's got a little pin and popped in obviously.

Um I don't think we got it quite right in qualifying um from my side and maybe a little bit was set up. We're going into the well, we are in the second half of the season now, we're going into the final four meetings of the year. At what point do you start sort of thinking a little bit more about the championship and um moving for championship points within the Jacksers, or do you just start you just carry on doing what you've been doing?

Yeah, I guess we're it's all been in the back of my mind since uh, so we've always been thinking about it. Um but yeah, I mean uh I guess as the season goes on they need a better view of where you are and where you're gonna end up. Um and I think it's gonna be tight till the end, so it's I think the the good days seem to be a bit easier, to be honest. Trying to minimize the bad days and trying to just keep it as consistent as possible, to be honest.

I think that's what everybody knows. When you've got a championship that's got 30 races in total, someone's gonna have a bad race, two, three, maybe over the course of thirty rounds. It's it it is inevitable, really, isn't it?

I mean you look at um Tom and Ash at the front, you know, the Tom's been quick, but he's he's had a few DNS and uh about bad luck, so um but that's what that's what really helps the championship. You know, you need you need to finish and you need to try and finish there or thereabouts um just to try and take the points off and eventually end up in your home for the top.

Now we've got we've got now four Scottish drivers on the grid in the quick fit British Touring Car Championship. Um that's a pretty good number um uh to to be represented. And to have your your home race, does that bring any sort of extra pressure upon you, or is it just a bit more fun?

Exactly. We'll start to take over. Um no, it's good to see. Um yeah, especially the local and begins, I think you're the don't you know if you're scotting, and it's good to see. I think it's kind of it's well for myself, it's the best atmosphere we get in the in the season, and I think it's a lot of people. Um the truth's not um giant, so you know, everything feels a bit compact, but I think uh brings a um a better level of atmosphere. It was uh also on my mind when we got to Knock Hill that it was uh a year ago um that the generosity of you uh and your family were uh uh allowed the team that you're now racing with to carry on racing in the championship last year. That was that was quite something for the team that you're now with, isn't it?

Yeah, exactly. I mean you look at what they've done in a year, you know, it's uh it's it's a big it's a big step. Um I guess something's just four cars, but you know, there's a lot, a lot, a lot of prep that goes in over the winter to to build those four cars and and spit it starting from nothing, you know. They didn't really have a tool left to to build it all back up again to run four cars. Um just uh remarkable from their side. So um no, it's it's good to see the guys in the middle of the rope reward them with something at the end of the weekend for all the hard work over uh the last year.

And one thing we did nearly get at the weekend was you on the podium outright. That was so close.

I didn't even realise I was probably uh that close to the end, and I started sort of coming in down in front, and I was uh had uh a couple clearer laps at the start of the race, then maybe it could have been into the fight. Um, because the speed was good. Um push me on the way, um, and I was just sort of trying to manage to get up to him. Um and it wasn't till the last sort of three, four laps uh when you started to look in front and he could I could see Diamond sort of coming back to me a little bit. So uh yeah, no, that was close, but you know, it's it shows that you know we've we've got the pace to be able to be there when when the time's right.

But Aidan Moffitt unfortunately then suffered a string of disappointing bits of bad luck over the course of Sunday. But the good news on Saturday was enough to carry us forward and say, evening Aidan, how are we?

But that was the thing. Saturday, everything looked so good. So many people were saying, I reckon Aidan's gonna be on on pole, he's gonna win the race to pole this afternoon. And it started going wrong lunchtime on on Saturday four, didn't it?

Yeah, I mean we some for that wasn't right in the settings on the dash of the car uh locked me out of boost, and that cost me pole position. Um the time it cost me would have been on pole. Um and then yeah, who knows for the race itself, um how that would have went, but I know we we certainly would have had good pace. Obviously, we start in seventh with the disappointment we got we got um taken out at turn one. Um and that was the end of that.

Yep. It's such a shame because uh obviously it is your your local race, your home race, and there must be so many people that are there to to cheer you on, and that must give you a a bit of an impetus to to have a good weekend. You must have been so chuffed after free practice.

Yeah, it did, it was brilliant. Um but yeah, I mean uh you're still only really focusing on the the important job, which is qualifying, obviously. You don't get yourself too excited about the practice. Um but we I knew there was lots of time still in the car and some little tweaks, so I knew we could go quicker again, and um yeah, it would have been a comfortable poll actually. So it's uh it was a very frustrating one to take, um hard one to take, but it's Yeah, I mean the past few meetings we had just as much bad luck at Froxton, uh snared, and obviously the the car let me down um on uh the start of the race and then posed a horrible Sunday, so I'm getting pretty used to it this year.

It's not fair, it's not fair, but uh the luck has to turn at some time. And and the good news is that you have slotted into the team. I can see that you're you're happy within the team, you're happy with this brand new car that's uh been uh unveiled for for this season. Uh all the signs are there, you just need the luck to change a little bit.

Well, let's have a look at those. So we're going to Donington Park, Grand Prix Circuit, Croft Circuit, uh, Silverstone, and and Brands Hatch. Are there any of those four that you think, you know, maybe that's gonna be that's gonna be the day that we get you back on the podium and who knows, maybe even on the top step again?

Not really, to be honest. But I think um we've got a lot of issues with the front end of the car and the slow speed in the traction, and the car's been horrific at race starts all year, which um has been the same for us all. A race start used to be my strong point, but we only go backwards now, so even if you're at the front, you're always going to be um have to worry about that, which is frustrating. But I think that leads on to the traction issues. We also have um so yeah, I don't I think Silverston could potentially be difficult. Um obviously with the nature of the corners, I don't know how we'll look after the front left. And then uh Croft has got a few tight corners as well, so I guess it's going to depend what we can make up elsewhere in the lap. Yes, um compared to what we'll lose. But I think that's the car's weakest points that I think we need to explore a lot more than the kind of dampened bones of the car, but that's something we've not the the team haven't really had a chance to get around to yet. So I think there's a a lot more things that need to be improved before you can go into a weekend with the utmost confidence. Um but it's yeah, I mean it's they've bought a good chassis, it's uh all the recipes is there. Um it just kind of needs the the final bits to come together, I guess.

W what areas is the car strong? And where where where do you enjoy driving it?

I mean the car is very good on the brakes and it's very good in high speed corners. You know, that's why we were so good at Donington, it's really kind of fast and out corners, um rather than these kind of technical long corners or the ones that tighten up or really traction limit corners. So that's those flowing tracks like Donington, uh in those type of corners the car goes very well. Not kill, I mean you can hustle a car around, not kill, and you can kind of um I think if you're fast at not kill, you can get the most out of anything to a certain degree.

Um so that was often a big help as well. So yeah, I don't know. Um we thought we'd be good at Frosting and we weren't. Um so I don't know what will happen, but I think the big thing is the sport engine in the car, it really struggles with the hot air. Uh we overheat a lot and draw power, so the cooler air uh knock hell was one of the big helps which gave us the engine power. Um that we have been lacking over some of these hotter races. So I think it's really going to have to I think the weather is really going to play a big part in where we think we will and won't be strong.

Yeah, at the moment it's been a pretty relentless hot meeting after hot meeting, hasn't it? The uh the only respite in that was uh was Nock Hill, and even that uh towards the end of the afternoon the sunshine came out, it was uh it was a summer's day once again. Um but you you never quite know weather wise what you're gonna get at Nock Hill. You have to sort of plan for everything, don't you?

Yeah, um but yeah, I mean the car was great in the rain as well. That's the first time we've been out in the wet in the car, and yeah, I'm worried we'll have a bit of fun in race one, so at least we know we've got a good car now. Yes, we've got a skip higher company, so obviously just doing skip trucks, waste collections, people come in kind of trade waste tipping on site with us, and this site where I have I do some kind of like rent out as a 15 units, 16 yards of rent out as well, and do some container storage and things like that, also. So yeah, plenty going on, mate, plenty going on.

I do, yeah, I do. And they they don't break down as much, so that's that's a very good point.

Do you enjoy driving the the big machinery? Last week I was working on a job down in uh in Cornwall, uh a television job, uh, which was a factory that makes all these uh uh amazing bits of kit that go on the back of tractors and um you know they gnaw down the the stump of a tree and all that kind of stuff. I've I personally the big kit I find it fascinating. Do you enjoy driving it?

I prefer driving it to race cars this year. Yeah, I mean I just I I learned to drive trucks when I was about eleven or twelve years old. I do loading stuff with hi-abs for stock car racing in my dad's yard and big sliding tilts as a kid and uh getting ready to go racing. So yeah, I thought for me it's um I've driven trucks all my life, uh JCBs, big shovels, twenty-two-ton grabs, all of that. I haven't had my class one license since I was 19, so it's just for me it's something needs done, someone needs to do it. So I just um kind of jump at anything. But yeah, it's good. It's I like having a job where everything's a bit different each day, and there's always some sort of problem you have to deal with. I'm not really the type of person that can just sit and look at a screen all day every day. So I get that. Yeah, hands-on is uh it's enjoyable. So I yeah, I guess I enjoy what I do to be fair. And playing with some big toys is uh always a bit of a bonus.

As my mum said, uh you have to enjoy what you do in work because you're a long time working. So uh yeah, you have you have to enjoy it. Uh I and and and finally, Aidan, I did get to have a chat just walking back to uh to my car at the end of Sunday. Uh I saw your dad in the pit lane, and uh because I wasn't rushing off to get a flight, I was flying on on Monday morning. Uh had a bit of time to have a chat to him, which I always enjoy doing. And uh and I said to him, Where did Aiden get the the the motorsport from? Um uh did did did you drive? He did a little bit, didn't he?

Yeah, he was always the banger racing was his thing, so a few Scottish championships, his name of that, but I just grew up watching him and uh my team manager Alan Potts. My whole childhood was really loving going to racing and watching them, and I guess that's where it kind of came from.

And his enthusiasm is is a big part of your race weekend, isn't it?

My dad's yes. I don't even know if he likes it. I think he just likes making the trucks look shiny and doing sponsorship deals. He just likes he likes wheeling and dealing. He was starting his life as a car salesman, so uh I think he just likes doing deals, really.

Well, he did a pretty good deal, didn't he, when he uh signed you up with LKQ Euro car parts. That's uh that's a great sponsor to have for you.

Yeah, too good a deal. If you never done that, I would have been retired for two years by now and happy, but never mind, here we are. That's a great sponsor, LKQ. They're a fantastic sponsor support as well. And you know, weekends like that where it's went horrific and it'd be easy to feel like you let someone down, you know they've got a lot of support and see all the positives and how unlucky we were with things, you know. It's getting taken out from being seventh, it's we shouldn't have been starting seventh. Um the first race, 22nd to ninth, was fantastic. The second race, the car getting a bad start, man. I was on the inside of a couple of people onto turn one that made contact, and I had to try and tighten the car up to avoid them, and um and then that put me in another slide as I kind of as I caught the first slide. So I mean that's kind of um a lot of bad luck with a very understanding of that, and uh they've kind of they push us a lot, and they uh I think it's a very professional looking outfit, the way the way they do things and get involved. So you can't ask for much more from a sponsor than that, and to feel like you're a part of uh such a such a big company that um name is so well known and respected.

And uh and and your dad could be very proud, because the trucks were very shiny. They did look very they do look smart, don't they? I suppose in your line of business it would be wrong if they didn't.

Or when someone someone naughty hides a bloody painting and a skippy and scraping all the white paint off the back of the lenses. Another weekend of uh racing over and done with, and what a breakthrough weekend for Cataclone Play-Though Racing. Both Mercedes dominated Group 1 and uh a one and a three in the race to pole, followed by a sensational one-two in uh the race one and a podium in each of the remaining two races. Let's hope that their performance continues for the rest of the season. Ash Sutton's dominance continued with a fourth and a first and uh struggled in race three to finish twelfth and to extend his championship lead to 81 points. Can you remember the last time that there was a big points gap between first and second in the standings at this time during the season, Alan? I can't actually. Um there have been some dominant performances in the in the past, but this is uh this year is is quite exceptional despite everything that's done in the championship regulations to not have a runaway winner. Um, it's just incredible, isn't it? Absolutely no. So the answer is no, I don't remember such a big point, Scap. Uh Tingram's bad luck continued with engine issues in race one and unfortunate damage in race two. Uh, and what a job by the team to get the engine out even before uh the race had even finished. And after the highs of Truxton, it was a weekend to forget for Josh Cook. Charles Rainford had a storming drive from 21st on the grid to finish sixth in race two, and now for the two-week break before Donington Park GP. And I'll see you there for race day.
